But the levels cannot compete with or supplant one another. Rather, hierarchical models of nested theories can account more fully for the behavioral phenomena we cherish. As I will argue later, pitting proximal and distal variables against each other in competing models can enrich our theoretical lives and save us fruitless attempts at intervention.
