It may well be doubted if a pagan could have thought of writing a history of mankind. A history of the Athenians or the Romans, to be sure – but where does any pagan writer attempt a history of the species? In contrast, Christians have always viewed history as moral drama, a single continuous narrative of sin and redemption in which the salvation of humankind is implicated. In any Christian view, it may not be given us to divine the ways of providence; but it cannot be doubted that history unfolds under its guidance.

They are indivisible. It follows that every person is not only the member of a people, the citizen of a nation, the adherent of a religious community, and so forth, but also has ‘inalienable human rights’.
