The air pistol they use must, however, only be on loan and be owned by a person of 18 or over. Under the age of 14 a youngster may only use an air pistol under the strict supervision of a person aged 21 or above. The law does not stipulate that the supervising adult needs to posses any form of coaching certificate or that they should be able to prove competency in any other way. You would be surprised to know how many people have shot themselves in the foot, literally, due to a lazy point of the muzzle at the ground! To recap – when picking up a pistol instantly point the muzzle in a safe direction and then check the safety. Picking up the Pistol 1. Point the muzzle in a safe direction: to the ground . . 2. . or skywards. 3. 4. Note that the pistol is held by the butt with the trigger finger along the side of the frame. Never touch the trigger until you are ready to fire.

This last safety rule has to do with the actual firing of the weapon: never fire until you have clearly identified your target and what is behind it. The second part of this rule is very important. A lot of shooters get ‘tunnel-vision’ when shooting, getting carried away by the excitement, and they are not very aware of what is going on around the target. Children, pets and even uninformed adults can quite easily get themselves into the danger zone on a range without realizing it, and this is why the shooter must be fully cognizant of all that is going on in the vicinity of the target.
