Research has shown that between the ages of 3 and 10, children gradually become more accurate in distinguishing fantasy from reality on television. Until they are 4, children believe that everything on television is real. Young preschoolers sometimes even think that television characters live inside the TV set (Noble, 1975). Two- to threeyear-olds have been observed running to the kitchen to get a paper towel after seeing an egg breaking on television (Jaglom & Gardner, 1981). Howard (1998) found that most 4-year-olds in her study were convinced that Big Bird and Bugs Bunny are real.

This is why many young preschoolers like to watch programs with a slow pace and lots of repetition, and why they are usually not attracted to fast-paced programs with rapidly changing images (Anderson & Burns, 1991). A good example of a slow-paced program is Teletubbies. Although this program may irritate some adults, it is pre-eminently suited to the taste of toddlers and young preschoolers. Programs with lots of repetition offer children the opportunity to develop a kind of psychological mastery over the stories.

With this type of learning, children do not directly experience rewards or punishments but become aware of them through the models in their environment. , 9 is the median in the following series of numbers: 3, 4, 9, 12, 15). To read more about this conversion method, called the Binomial Effect Size Display (BESD), see Rosenthal and Rubin (1982), and McCartney and Rosenthal (2000).
